Isoxazoline Flea and Tick Products

November 2, 2018
In response to the recent safety communication released by the FDA in regard to Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica and Credelio, all isoxazoline products, the veterinarians at The Paw Patch Place still believe that Bravecto and Nexgard are among the safest and most effective flea and tick products on the market. We do not recommend any of these products for pets with a history of seizures or who have had an adverse reaction to any isoxazoline product. All effective flea and tick medicines have potential side effects. Bravecto and Nexgard went through rigorous FDA approval before being released. Per Merck, manufacturer of Bravecto, “Every molecule is unique, even within a class, and each has its own safety profile. After more than three years on the market with close to 30 million doses distributed in the US, the reporting rate for seizures for BRAVECTO® (fluralaner) falls below the cut off point for the most rare adverse event category that exists – namely, “very rare”, or less than 1/10,000 – under the classification system used by many regulators around the world.” The manufacturers are working on adding new labeling that include these rare tremors, ataxia and seizures. Compared to the other effective topical and oral flea and tick preventative, The Paw Patch Place staff believes Bravecto and Nexgard are among the safest on the market and uses these products on their own pets. We will continue to safeguard your pets health by researching all products before recommending them and be assured we will change our recommendation if new information surfaces.
Sincerely,
Penny Dowden DVM
